IN THE MAIL

- an Enote from Diane Bancroft for Gil Condon: "Tell Gil that Louie Bancroft is the grandfather. Myron would be a great-uncle. Must be that pitching is in their blood. Scott was a good lefty pitcher for Waterville, too!"

YESTERDAY WAS THE DAY

that lawnmowers came out of Winter storage.

The greens in Sangerfield were very green, indeed ..................

and, in the Village, Mrs. Lew's lawn was freshly mown as were the Olmsteads', across the street and those around the Plourde residence and Terry Meadows.

A eye-pleasing antidote for a gray day -- Springtime displays at Alcotts!

GRACE EPISCOPAL CHURCH

Closing Service

5:30 p.m.

From the early days of the settlement of Sangerfield and Waterville, in the late 1790’s, what Episcopalians there were in the community walked the seven miles to St Paul’s church on Paris Hill, which had been organized in 1795, to attend services.

In 1840, however, John Berrill and Amos Osborn made that trek to consult with the Rt. Rev. Bishop DeLancey, who was visiting there, for the purpose of consulting him on the matter of establishing an Episcopal Church in Waterville.

DeLancey gave his blessing to the organization of the parish and, two years later – in 1842 – he came to the Village to consecrate the first Episcopal church, which was on White Street.

Barely ten years later, the congregation had outgrown that building and purchased the site of the present building on the corner of East Main Street and Babbott Avenue. The White Street building was sold to the Welsh Congregational Society who used it until 1926, who, in turn, sold it to the Village for use as the municipal hall in 1931.

Grace Episcopal Church was consecrated on June 15, 1854.

FOR THE RECORD

The WCS Spring Recess starts tomorrow and ends on Monday, April 16, and I'll be taking a little vacation during the week, too.

Here, however, is one more event to add to your April calendar:

The Waterville Book Discussion Group will meet a noon
on
Wednesday, April 25th,
in the meeting room at the Library.

How many of you can name the Daphne DuMaurier novel that begins,
"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again."

Reserve a copy of the book at The Waterville Library by calling 8414651.

After lunch, the classic film, starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine will be shown.

Coffee, tea, and dessert will be served.

Have a good weekend, everyone!
