Today is the last day of school!

Students in Grades  K-6 will be dismissed at 11:20

*******

It's garbage day.

66 degrees at 6:00 a.m.

Officially, Summer began at precisely 7:09 p.m., yesterday, but it arrived in Waterville several hours before that:

It was 90 degrees at Noon.

The WKTV Weather Forecast:  "Hazy, hot and humid conditions continue today, with highs in the low 90s.  The heat index will approach the mid 90s in many areas.A cold front will sweep through late tonight, bringing perhaps an isolated thunderstorm.  Overnight lows only in the upper 60s.Scattered showers and thunderstorms earlly tomorrow, especially south and east of Utica.  Cooler, drier air beings to move in, with highs in the low to mid 80s.Beautiful weather expected this weekend!Much cooler, unsettled weather early next week.  Highs likely not getting out of the 60s by the middle of the week."

Yesterday
at the Farmers Market in the Park

Sue Tice was there with a too-tempting display of her own baked goods!  I left with two pumpkin-spice cookie sandwiches with a creamy filling:  by the time I got home, there was just one left, and that's in the freezer.

The folks from Longview Farm in Deansboro  were there, as always, with a full display of fine-looking fruits and vegetables.  I asked, and was told that: "We'll have corn from Maryland next week!"

I believe that there will be four or five more participants in the weekly-on-Wednesday event, and will list them as soon as I have the information.

Elsewhere

In Sangerfield, right next to Route 20, Day Lilies and Hollyhocks are in bloom.

There are several huge old catalpa trees in the area and they're easy to spot, now, covered as they are with big bunches of white blossoms.

White blossoms will show you where Elderberry bushes grow, too.

By mid-afternoon my car's thermometer read 93 degrees on the outside and I decided that I'd stay in the 68-degree air-conditioned interior a little longer, so I drove over Lewis Road South to see the view of Sanger Hill.

Heading East on Canning Factory Road to check out plants in a favorite swampy area, I passed this poor old house. I'm always surprised to find it still standing, and smile to think that my grandfather would have said:  "Now there's a fine fixer-upper for you!"

IN THE MAIL

From Brian Stone  -  "There is a new sign at the Van Hyning Road entrance on the towpath. There are also posts put in at intervals all along the path. The sign was put up by Nicholas Scoones. The posts are going to have plaques put on them identifying trees and plants along the trail."

(Blogger's note:  I believe that Nick Scoones has been working on this as an Eagle Scout project.  Thanks, Nick!  And thank you for the mail and the photo, Brian!)

From Jeff Reynolds, yesterday's photographic "progress report."

(Thanks, Jeff!)
