Here & There

It was a quiet day on Main Street, yesterday.

Scott Legacy was at work painting what he must now think is the largest house in the village!

Out in the country, huge clouds hung over Hanover, dwarfing the silos at the Eisenhut farm.

The hunt for Hops continues and, thanks to Norm Cowen, who stopped at my house yesterday morning to invite me to see his and Shane's hop vines .........

Not just one vine (or "bine" as they're called in England) ..

.... but several, with some of the largest "cones" I've ever seen, climbing upward and outward following lines that Norm has even strung up to the roof and out to maple trees!
(Thanks, Norm!)

My thanks to Linda Hazelden who tipped me off to a true Sunflower Sight on Norton Avenue northwest of Clinton and just this side of Lairdsville on Route 5.

There are acres and acres and ACRES of sunflowers!  Many have passed their prime, but the fields - there are two -  are still amazing.

Trivia for the Day

There is even a mathematical model of sunflower floret arrangement.

Illustration of Vogel's model for n=1 ... 500
A model for the pattern of florets in the head of a sunflower was proposed by H. Vogel in 1979.[20] This is expressed in polar coordinates

where θ is the angle, r is the radius or distance from the center, and n is the index number of the floret and c is a constant scaling factor. It is a form of Fermat's spiral. The angle 137.5° is related to the golden ratio (55/144 of a circular angle, where 55 and 144 are Fibonacci numbers) and gives a close packing of florets. This model has been used to produce computer graphics representations of sunflowers.
