It's Garbage Day, again!

60 degrees and clear at 6:30

The WKTV Weather Forecast: "Quiet and cloud free start to the day but clouds begin to increase this morning into the early afternoon. The cold front that moved through yesterday stalled just to our south and will be close enough to keep the chance for showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. Any thunderstorms that do develop have the potential for gusty winds and small hail. Temperatures will be a little bit cooler, with highs in the low 80s.

Unfortunately, the chance of rain increases on Friday into Saturday with temperatures in the mid 70s."

Here & There

On Elmwood, between Putnam and White Streets

S-m-o-o-t-h-!

I've raved about the yellow petunias in the Garden Club's "tubs,"   and owe the same applause to the Village DPW for their care of all of the hanging baskets on telephone poles along Main Street and by the park!

Thank you!

"Red sky at night, sailor's delight.
Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning."

In the Bible, (Matthew XVI: 2-3,) Jesus said, “When in evening, ye say, it will be fair weather: For the sky is red. And in the morning, it will be foul weather today; for the sky is red and lowering.”

Shakespeare said something similar in his play, "Venus and Adonis." “Like a red morn that ever yet betokened, Wreck to the seaman, tempest to the field, Sorrow to the shepherds, woe unto the birds, Gusts and foul flaws to herdmen and to herds.”

I've spent far too much time this morning just trying to get used to the new version of Photoshop. Right at the moment, I don't like it at all, but I'm sure that in a few weeks I'll declare that it's the best thing to ever happen to digital photographs.

One thing's for sure: it's nowhere as messy as using real paint!

More when it happens!
Have a great day, everyone.

It's Recyclables Day

58 degrees and sunny at 6:45

WKTV's Weather Forecast:  "On Wednesday, warmer and more humid air will return to CNY from the west.  As a cold front approaches, a brief shower or storm will be possible in the afternoon and evening.  Most of the day is expected to be rain-free.  This front will stall close to the local area through the end of the week and the weekend, keeping the chance for scattered rains in the forecast.

FOR THE RECORD

ALSO:

this is especially for older folks - my age! - who are afraid they'll "break" a computer if they try to do anything .....

Yesterday afternoon I upgraded my iMac to the latest OS (operating system,)"Mountain Lion," and then loaded the newest version of Photoshop and enabled "iCloud." It took several hours, but I did it all by myself, without biting my fingernails or even taking one Tylenol .....

and this morning it all works!!

If I can do it, you can, too!

Have a great day, everyone!

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

It's about twenty minutes past five on Tuesday morning.
Today is "Big Trash Day."

An odd sound woke me up at around five o'clock:

the furnace was running!

It's 49 degrees and definitely chilly!

There's nothing much in the news;
nothing in my mail;
no great photos, so .....

I'm going back to bed!
☺
Have a great day!

It was beastly hot and humid on Saturday morning.  I drove past the MKJ Farm on Route 12B in Deansboro. The gates were not scheduled to open until 3 o'clock, but there was plenty of pre-concert activity in progress.

Up the road, closer to Deansboro, Pat Hughes was just bringing an armload of freshly picked summer squash from the fields to his roadside stand where two of the signs read
"Eat Well" and "Eat Local".

I stopped, again, at the Kountry Kafe, drawn by the irresistible aroma of Chicken Barbeque being tended by Rachel Eisenhut and Brandon Savicki.
(Of course I took some home, and it was as delicious as it smelled!)

"Rose of Sharon" bushes covered with hibiscus-like flowers in all shades of white-to-pink-to-lavender-to deep purple and magenta are in bloom, everywhere.

In Case you were wondering.......

A bit of Oriskany Falls History

Sent to me by my good old friend Tom Anthony, who lived
in Hamilton for many years, and is now in Maine.
(How he came by this information, I have no idea!)

"Do you remember the Mirror Bar in Oriskany Falls?"

They made a passing fair pizza against the backdrop of this stunning, hand carved
mahogany bar with marble footrails and giant lion's heads of wood on each corner.
It was simply astounding. There was no plausible reason why it was in O'Falls,
and I assumed it probably was bought for a song when they took down a hotel in
Utica or something. At any rate, it was there until maybe 1975, when it
disappeared. I have just learned that it now resides in Seattle.
It is on Aurora in Shoreline, in a place called the Drift Inn Casino."

It's Garbage Day

59 degrees and clear at 6:30

The YNN Weather Forecast: "Ample sun is expected on Thursday with temperatures peaking in the upper 80s to around 90. The slight risk of an isolated thundershower will also develop after noon. A cold front will then produce a few spotty showers and thunderstorms on Friday with highs mainly in the 80s.

A mix of sun and clouds is expected for Saturday with highs in the low 90s. As of now, chances look good for scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop with the most numerous after noon and evening.

A cold front then arrives on Sunday with more clouds and occasional showers and thunderstorms."

Another History Ride

"HANOVER"

"The Hanover society - congregational - was organized in in 1797. Those who established it were from Puritan stock and took the name 'Hanover'  from the Dutch state to which some of their ancestors had fled for religious freedom."  Priest Ingersoll, 1903.

"Where is Hanover?"

Two hundred years ago there really was a place called "Hanover."

There was a church and a school,
a post office, a little store and several homes located at Hanover Green.

This is the "green," now.

Nowadays, when someone refers to "Hanover," they mean an area somewhere north of Waterville -  and just how large or exactly where that area is seems to be open to personal interpretation.

 This is mine.

To me, "Hanover" covers a wonderfully vast expanse. It's all of the open farmland that lies on a plateau, higher than nearby spaces.

I drive through Hanover nearly every day.

It's where there are some of my favorite views - perhaps because they remind me of Kansas, where we lived for several years .....

..and where I've taken some of my favorite photographs.

Marshall Township Historian Dorothy McConnell published a book called "Memories of Hanover" a few years ago.  I believe copies are available at the Town Hall in Deansboro.

I've just posted a much longer writing - the "History of the Hanover Society," written by Ada Marie Peck in 1901 - in my Google Documents on the internet.  To read it,  click HERE.

************************

Jody Hildreth has been taking lots of pictures of a particular "view" at my house. For the last ten or fifteen years, pairs (or A pair) of Carolina Wrens have been building nests in either hanging plants right next to my back door, a maibox in which I store garden tools, or in window boxes at my kitchen window.

This year it's a window box. And it's twins!

It's Recyclables Day

64 degrees at 5:30 a.m.

The YNN Weather Forecast:  "Today will be a warm and humid one with temperatures generally topping out in the mid 80s. Low pressure is expected to slowly push eastward which will keep in the threat for scattered showers and storms.

Through the end of the work week dry weather will prevail with just the threat for a hit or miss shower/storm. It will be hot as well with highs in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees.

Temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s should carry over into the weekend with the best chance for showers and storms being on Sunday."

A Few Photos

There has been quite a lot of "fixing up" activity at "the gray house" on the corner of Park Place and Sanger Avenue......

........ and also at the Gilchrist residence on Putnam Street.
What is referred to as "the gray house" was built by W. B. Candee, some time before 1874, and the Gilchrists' home, completed in 1896, was built by D. Conger at a total cost of $17,000.

************************

Fine cones are forming on several of the hop vines at the library, and labels identifying each variety of vine have recently been attached to each pole. I'm told that one is called "Waterville."

All of the Waterville Garden Club's "tubs" of yellow petunias along Main Street are overflowing!

(Can someone tell me how many such "tubs" there are? I've tried to count, several times, but always get distracted... )

North of the village, on Shanley Road, the table at the Landis Farm Stand is filled with fresh flowers and produce.

At Bailey Lake, and elsewhere, Purple Loosestrife is in bloom and the waterlilies at the lake are budded.

Anyone who has lived in Waterville for more than a year or two probably knows where Bailey Lake is, but I've been asked to put more maps on the blog so that newcomers can find things.

From Sangerfield, drive south on Rt. 12 for about 3 miles. Turn left and go another mile-and-a-half or so, up and over the hill.

Bailey Lake was named for very early settlers Azubah Rogers Bailey and her son, Vine, who - according to family geneologists  - "  .. walked from Mohegan, CT. to Brothertown Oneida Co., NY.  around 1780. Azubah Bailey joined the Brothertown Indians under Rev. Samson Occom a Mohegan, CT. Indian.  Azubah is buried in the Brothertown Indian Cemetery NY."

As noted in a Utica newspaper, Azubah died in 1823 at the age of 98!  Curiously, there is no record of her membership in the "Brothertown" community. A number of her descendants are buried in the Stockwell cemetery.

One of her many descendants sent me this picture of her daughter, who was also named "Azubah."
