It's Garbage Day

28 degrees and clear at 6:00 a.m.

From WKTV:  "Warmer weather will finally arrive here as we head into the week.  For today, sunshine gives way to a few afternoon clouds.  Highs in the low 60s.  Less windy compared to the weekend too!

Clouds with rain arrives tonight.  Lows in the mid 40s.

Clouds with showers early tomorrow, followed by some sunshine.  Highs in the mid 60s.  Warmer weather still by Wednesday and Thursday, with highs in the mid to upper 70s.  The chance for an isolated thunderstorm both days.

Showers and thunderstorms on Friday with drier weather by the weekend.

****************************

Yesterday was bright and sunny, but the high was only around 45 degrees.

One of my favorite views.

(It's a large file and makes great "wallpaper.")

I think that it's been too chilly for Morels to grow, but I've been told that the "Fiddleheads" are especially fine.

May Apple leaves have been unfurlurling like little umbrellas.

Apple Blossoms everywhere!

Watch for the ornamental Crabapple trees at the point of the Park to bloom!

(Does anyone know when the four trees were planted and whether or not they were "memorial" trees?)

"Growing" on more and more front lawns:

There are more and more Colleen Emerson signs and, now,  many new signs placed by - or on behalf of - write-in candidate Jamie Decker.

A note from Joe DeVecchio, who lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, and was "visiting" Waterville by way of Google Earth.......

He pointed out to me that there are NEW views of the Village on Google Earth and that now you can see the Memorial Bandstand in the Park.

I spent quite a while enjoying the sky-eye view of the village, too, and was delighted to see what the Library and its Gardens look like!

The photograph shows the solar panels, on the side lawn, but is not recent enough to indicate that the construction of a new building, quite near them, is under way.

Rotarian-carpenters - including Library Director Jeff Reynolds -  were on site Saturday afternoon  putting the beams in place.

(I'm sure that even though there has been no "formal" announcement, a great many people who live nearby know what the building will be used for.  I'll wait until the Library gives me the go-ahead to tell you!)

On May 17, 2006  -  "Flowering crabapple and redbud trees are putting on fine displays......."

Yes - everything IS early this year, and even more so in Deansboro and Clinton because, as anyone who has ever ridden their bicycle uphill all the way from Deansboro can tell you,  Waterville's elevation is noticeably higher - and the air that much colder -  than either of those communities.

You can see for yourself, without having to get your bike out, by going to TopoQuest:

Waterville - 1,237 ft. above sea level.
Deansboro - 795'
Clinton - 600'

It's Recyclables Day

37 degrees and clear at 6:00 a.m.

WKTV's Weather Forecast:  "Another unsettled day in the works in Central New York.  Clouds this morning will give way to at least some sunshine this afternoon.  Scattered rain and snow showers.  Highs in the upper 40s.  Partly cloudy skies tonight with patchy frost and lows in the low 30s.

A break of sun early Thursday, followed by another round of rain.  Highs in the mid 50s.

Cooler, but finally drier by Friday."

Although there has been some snow in the air, there hasn't been any accumulation anywhere round Waterville.  I've just been checking some of the area "webcams," and the one at Barnes Corners is the only one that shows snow on the ground.

There are two things to be said in favor of rain:
  • 1.)  I think the farmers will be happy, and
  • 2.)  it's good for growing morels. (A particularly delicious wild mushroom!)

********************

I confess:  yesterday was so dank and dismal that I didn't spend any time at all looking for pictures to show you. Instead, I spent most of the day digging for some history and that, I think, begins much like putting one foot into quicksand!  Before you know it, both feet are mired and you're sinking  deeper and deeper into the search.  But I promise; there will be pictures of something, tomorrow!

I just found this Blogspot list of people who read "At Home in the Huddle" and
the countries in which they live.

I wonder who the ones in Russia, Slovenia, Brazil, Columbia and Germany are and wish that they'd send me "Hello!" Emails
****************************
The following is a Letter to the Editor that I sent to The Waterville Times. It will probably appear in this week's issue, due out today, and I'd like you to read it, too!

To the Editor:

“How ARE you?” It's a question that we all ask, automatically, when we see someone we know in places like the Post Office parking lot or in Foodking or Morgan's or even at the pharmacy counter in CVS.  The usual reply, of course, is,  “Just fine, thanks! How are you?”  and that usually takes care of that!
But then there are people like me! I've taken to using that greeting as an opportunity to launch into a five- or ten-minute recitation about my own recent medical adventures.  (Many of you may have heard my extended answer, before, but I don't want to miss a single chance to praise the Harding Nursing Home and everyone there!)
For years I've read in Dottie Ruane's column in The Waterville Times that “So-and-So is in Hardings for 'rehab,'” and have never really known just what “rehab” meant.  Now I do.
When I was released from St. Elizabeth's Hospital, on the 1st of March, I had been there for nearly two weeks, flat on my back, and on a diet of broth, Jell-O and Italian ice. I could barely stand up by myself, I was hooked by cable to an oxygen tank and was exhausted by the whole experience.  Anyone could tell that there was simply no way that I could take care of myself at home, alone.
That is why, for me and for others who find themselves in the same condition and/or situation, professional  rehabilitation is almost a necessity!
It was sheer good luck that there was a vacancy at Hardings, right here in Waterville, where the staff knew exactly what to do to turn me back into an independent person.  One of the first and best things I noticed was that everyone there smiled! (That, alone, was great medicine!)  Within a day or two the nursing staff had me up on my feet and had gradually weaned me off oxygen, completely; the dietician had added more and more real food to my meals (and yes -  the food is good!) and over the next couple of weeks Allison Tredwell - the Physical Therapist / Rehab Director, challenged and urged me and my legs to do more and more work.  (I never realized how much was involved, at first, in using a “walker,” and then relearning how to climb stairs!)
When I was discharged from Harding Nursing Home I had mixed feelings about “going home.” Excited - yes, but also sad to be leaving all the wonderful people that I'd met there. I told them that I would be writing a public “Thank You” to send to The Waterville Times and to publish, here,  that would serve to tell readers about the "rehab" program at the Harding Nursing Home and how much it had helped me. It's taken longer than I thought it would because my first draft was three pages long - probably the written equivalent of my ten-minute verbal answer to the question, “How ARE you?”  The short answer, is: “I'm just dandy, thank you, and I owe it all to 'Hardings!' ”
I don't want it to sound as if I'm not indebted, too, to my daughter, Allison, her husband, Rick, and their son, Iain, as well as the hundred-and- fifty or even more people who sent me Get Well cards and Email messages and flowers and who brought gifts.  Without all of your thoughtfulness, visits, generosity, prayers and good wishes and encouragement the Harding team might have had a less eager and cooperative patient, but you made me smile and feel ever so much more determined to get better, back to the Waterville world and back to the blog too!

Thank you, everyone!

Weekend Special

*********************

It's 45 degrees and gray at 4:30 on Sunday afternoon.

WKTV's Weather Forecast:  "By the late (Sunday) evening  another round of rain is slated to return as a storm system develops along the frontal boundary. Rain will be steady and heavy at times throughout the overnight and into Monday morning. Lows drop back to near 40 degrees.

Soggy start to Monday with steady rain tapering off to scattered showers. Any snow will be well off to our west, closer to Jamestown and Buffalo. Temperatures will once again be in the low 50s.

Cool, wet weather continues into the middle of the week.  Highs will stay in the 50s."

I don't really want to cause a panic, but ACCUWEATHER is predicting
a "powerful, cold storm" along the northeast.

Earth Day Weekend Village Cleanup

Even before I reached Municipal Hall, where Rotarian Lou Langone was registering volunteers,
I passed two smiling groups on White Street.

I didn't think that there had been so many children, before .................

..... but Amanda Briggs explained that many of the girls were members of Brownie Scout Troop #931 and that some of them had brought their parents, brothers and sisters along to help, too!

They found plenty of junk along the roailroad tracks.

A volunteer holds a trash bag for Rotarian Deb Conway who was cleaning up the hillside next to the sidewalk over the culvert on West Main Street.

Rotarians Sue and Bill Getman also knew where to find the most - and heaviest - trash:
Sue was out on Madison Street, beyond Jack Prior's place........

............. and I found Bill north of the village, beyond the crest of the hill before Daytonville Road, working his way back to a waiting pickup truck that already had a couple of bags in it.

All of the junk that was collected filled the dumpster behind the Fire House.

If you see any of the Rotarians or the Brownies,
please thank them for all of their work!

Norway Maple blossoms - one of the sweetest flowers to put in a bouquet.

The blossoms on the ornamental Pear Trees along West Main Street must be sweet, too - bees and bugs of several varieties were making the trees "hum."

Clumps of little Grecian Wind Flower bloom on the side lawn of Bill O'Dowd's home.

"Bleeding Heart" is starting to bloom at the house on the corner of Barton Avenue and White Street
and the leaves of another variety of Dicentra, called "Dutchmen's Britches," make feathery carpets in  countryside hardwoods.
